An opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced Microbiology professional to join a clinically led pathology service delivering high-quality, compliant microbiology services across the South East region. The post holder will play a key role in leading specialist microbiology services, providing expert diagnostic input, supporting clinicians, and contributing to service quality, governance, and workforce development.
Job Responsibility:
Provide specialist microbiology diagnostic services, including interpretation and validation of results
Offer expert advice to clinicians on appropriate investigations, test selection, and turnaround times
Lead on designated specialist areas within microbiology, working independently where required
Resolve complex technical, equipment, or process-related issues
Ensure high standards of infection control, laboratory safety, and quality compliance
Participate in research, service evaluation, and the introduction of new diagnostic techniques
Lead and supervise a section of the microbiology laboratory where required
Delegate tasks effectively and support the smooth day-to-day running of the service
Act as a mentor and supervisor for junior scientific and support staff
Contribute to workforce training, competency assessment, and professional development
Work flexibly to meet service needs, including participation in a 24/7 service rota where applicable
Maintain and promote Quality Management Systems and accreditation standards
Participate in internal and external audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations
Contribute to continuous service improvement and clinical governance initiatives
Ensure compliance with data protection, confidentiality, and information governance requirements
Deliver training and specialist education to laboratory staff and trainees
Maintain evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Participate in appraisal, revalidation, and mandatory training processes
Requirements:
Full HCPC registration
Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Significant experience working in a microbiology laboratory
Strong theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in specialist microbiology procedures
Experience in Quality Management Systems and risk assessment
Ability to work independently and lead specialist services
Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
Nice to have:
IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent post-registration qualification
Previous experience leading or line-managing staff
Experience contributing to service development, audit, or research
