The Student Assistant will support the Department of Information Technology as a Research and Technical Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2026. Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period. Employment is contingent upon funding.
Job Responsibility:
Divides their time between technical systems administration and academic research support
Technical and IT Infrastructure Projects Networking: Cisco router/switch configuration, port forwarding, and data collection
Virtualization: Setup and management of VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, and Proxmox systems
Server Management: Installation and configuration of Windows Server (2019/2022), Active Directory, DNS, and Linux servers for honeypot testing
Hardware: Data center decommissioning, rack-mounted server installation, and repurposing hardware
Cybersecurity: Setup and testing of penetration testing tools
scripting in Python, PowerShell, or Bash
implementing IDS/IPS using SNORT or Splunk
Software Development: Coding in Python, Java, or C#
running scripts on the Georgia Southern High Performance Computing Cluster
Research and Program Support Scholar Assistance: Helping ELITE scholars prepare research posters, presentations, and dissemination materials
Data Analysis: Preparing and cleaning qualitative transcripts, coding thematic analysis, and performing descriptive statistical analysis
Literature and Documentation: Conducting literature searches on STEM education, summarizing scholarly research, and maintaining organized project files
Web and Outreach: Updating/upgrading the program website and potentially consulting with external organizations
Requirements:
Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University
Consistently exhibit engaging customer service
Ability to support various constituencies served by the University
Proven proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Google, and/or applications as required for specific position
Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success
Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills
Nice to have:
Undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Information Technology full time
Strong interest in IT research, cybersecurity, or STEM education
Experience with Data Science Libraries (Python/R) or AI implementation
