Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Stroke Consultant to join a dedicated and progressive stroke service in Scotland. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality stroke care across the full patient pathway, including hyper-acute, acute, and rehabilitation phases. The role offers involvement in advanced stroke services, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathways, as well as opportunities in service redesign, research, and teaching within a well-supported, multidisciplinary environment.

Job Responsibility:

  • Deliver comprehensive stroke care, including hyper-acute, acute, and rehabilitation phases
  • Participate in hyper-acute stroke services, including thrombolysis and involvement in thrombectomy pathways
  • Provide rapid assessment and management of patients within stroke units, supported by a multidisciplinary team
  • Contribute to TIA services, including rapid access clinics with dedicated imaging pathways
  • Participate in telemedicine-supported hyper-acute stroke on-call rota (approximately 1:8), including remote assessment where required
  • Support inpatient stroke care, including ward rounds, multidisciplinary rehabilitation planning, and discharge coordination
  • Contribute to stroke service development, including the redesign of acute stroke pathways and the centralisation of services where applicable
  • Participate in specialist clinics, including stroke follow-up and subspecialty interests such as tone management or lipid management
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including specialist nurses, therapists, psychologists, and pharmacists
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff, contributing to their training and professional development
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Contribute to research activities, including participation in clinical trials and service innovation
  • Participate in teaching and education of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees

Requirements:

  • Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • Stroke CCT or significant experience in hyper-acute stroke care and imaging interpretation
  • Extensive clinical experience in stroke medicine, including hyper-acute stroke care
  • Experience in thrombolysis and acute stroke pathways
  • Experience managing high-volume acute admissions and complex cases
  • Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience working within NHS systems and service delivery models
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills in stroke medicine
  • Ability to interpret neuroimaging and manage acute stroke presentations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in acute clinical environments
  • Strong multidisciplinary teamwork skills
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Evidence of involvement in teaching and supervision of trainees
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
