We are recruiting a Consultant Stroke Physician to join a well-established and expanding Stroke service in South East England. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a high-performing multidisciplinary stroke team delivering comprehensive hyperacute, acute and rehabilitation stroke care. The service provides approximately 800–900 stroke admissions each year, with dedicated Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) facilities, rapid access TIA clinics, advanced neuroimaging, thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathways, and strong rehabilitation services. New consultants benefit from structured mentorship and opportunities to develop specialist interests, research and leadership skills.
Job Responsibility
Deliver high-quality hyperacute, acute and rehabilitation stroke care
Lead daily ward rounds for patients admitted to the Hyperacute Stroke Unit and Acute Stroke Unit
Assess and manage patients presenting with suspected acute stroke
Attend thrombolysis calls and coordinate thrombectomy referrals where appropriate
Provide specialist review for stroke patients, including those requiring intensive care
Deliver comprehensive inpatient stroke management and secondary prevention
Run Rapid Access TIA clinics and Stroke follow-up outpatient clinics
Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and discharge planning
Work closely with rehabilitation, vascular, neuroradiology and cardiology teams to deliver integrated stroke care
Support early supported discharge and community stroke rehabilitation services
Participate in the 1:6 thrombolysis on-call rota
Participate in the 1:4 weekend rota covering acute stroke admissions, ward reviews and urgent TIA patients
Supervise and teach junior doctors, medical students and multidisciplinary colleagues
Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, research and service development
Support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Requirements
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP or equivalent)
Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Stroke Medicine, General Internal Medicine or a relevant speciality (or within six months of CCT/CESR at interview)
Extensive experience in General (Internal) Medicine and Stroke Medicine
Strong experience in hyperacute stroke care, thrombolysis, TIA management and stroke rehabilitation
Experience participating in multidisciplinary stroke services
Evidence of participation in clinical management
Good understanding of Clinical Governance and appraisal processes
Thorough understanding of clinical audit
Understanding of clinical research principles
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Strong IT and clinical information system skills
Commitment to service development and high-quality patient care
Good attendance and professional conduct
Enthusiasm for teaching medical students, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals
UK Driving Licence
Nice to have
MD or equivalent higher degree
Experience in additional relevant medical specialities
Courses relating to Stroke Medicine or Care of the Elderly
Ability to develop a subspecialty interest within Stroke Medicine
Management qualification or leadership training
Knowledge of NHS structure and service delivery
Published audit or research work
Experience leading clinical research projects
Educational qualification
Strong presentation skills
Evidence of leading quality improvement or service development initiatives
