Requirements

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Completion of a Scrub Technician program preferred
None required. One (1) year of sterile processing experience preferred
AAMI Certification preferred
Knowledge of storage and stock rotation of all instrumentation stored in the department
Knowledge of infection control and universal precautions when reprocessing patient care equipment
Knowledge of instrumentation
Skill in preparing orders and delivering supplies and equipment to units or OR
Skill in organizing instrumentation for quick viewing and access
Skill in organizing work for efficiency while pulling and delivering instrumentation and collecting returns

Job Responsibility

Supports daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation including scanning and tracking, decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes with basic knowledge of professional standards and regulations
Inspects patient instruments and reusable equipment and assesses for functionality and safety
enters work orders for repairs into computer system
Prepares cases for OR by conducting an inventory review of OR suites and single peel packed instrumentation and collects needed items designated by preference cards to case specific carts to ensure optimal levels of stock are available
Orders and restocks single instrumentation, trays, and equipment as needed, returns unused instruments and trays to their designated spot as deemed via the tracking system, and regularly reviews for damaged or non-repairable instrumentation to be removed from service for repair or replacement
Ensures cleanliness and sterility are maintained during transport
Differentiates between steam and Sterrad supplies-package instrumentation and equipment according to specifications and appropriate method of sterilization
Operates & understands the sterilization process. Loads and unloads sterilizers according to departmental and AAMI standards
Performs, under supervision, quality control checks and maintains standards as required by TJC, AORN, and AAMI on all process related equipment
Conducts and records mechanical, chemical, and biological monitoring of the steam autoclaves and peroxide based sterilizers. Recognizes improper functions, reports findings, and calls for repairs

Job Responsibility

Receives soiled and contaminated items in decontamination area
Sorts equipment, rinses as needed, places equipment through sonic tanks and washers, reassembles trays, performs safety checks, hangs and sorts instruments, wraps sets according to set policy, and wraps towels and basins appropriately
Sterilizes instruments and equipment using the aerator, gas sterilizer or steam sterilizer and operates glass dryer
Packages items in steri/peel as required
Performs quality assurance testing for all methods of sterilization to ensure sterility of supplies
Hand cleans miscellaneous instruments (Baxter pump, hypothermo units, etc.) and operates the cart cleaner
Ensures proper care and handling of high cost instrumentation and equipment to include items requiring special handling, laser instrumentation, orthopedic implants, cardiac assist devices, endoscopic and microscopic instrumentation
May build case carts according to procedure and physician preference as specified
File case cart sheets and requisitions, responds to Code 4s with defibrillator and back up supplies, maintains CPR annies, tests autoclaves with the tests according to procedure, and changes graphs as necessary
Checks incoming trays and follows up with departments as to missing instruments or parts

Identifies instruments for all specialties and assures proper function. Follows protocol for repair or replacement of instruments that are not functioning properly. Assembles and packages all instrumentation and sets according to dept. protocol. Utilizes equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and hospital policy
Operates steam autoclaves, ETO and Gas Plasma sterilizers. Maintains appropriate logs and records relating to the sterilization process, including the Ethylene Oxide Aeration Records, Sterilizer Load Records, and Biological Monitoring Records
Responds to problem calls from the Operating Room and performs preliminary investigation. Determines priority level of instrumentation and equipment requests and other hospital needs. Directs services in a competent and professional manner while assuring OR priorities are completed in a timely manner
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day
