Job Responsibility:

  • PERFORMANCE OF PACKAGING/WRAPPING AND ALL STERILIZATION FUNCTIONS: STEAM, ETO AND STERRAD
  • Validates each sterilization cycle utilizing biological, chemical and mechanical indicators
  • Reviews, initials and signs sterilization tape at end of cycle
  • Verifies and completes paperwork after BI has finished processing
  • Reports any malfunctioning equipment to Supervisor and/or Charge Tech immediately
  • Maintains a neat and clean work environment
  • Follows established procedures to package/wrap items for Terminal Sterilization
  • Ability to perform Bowie Dick and Biological Testing
  • Positions each item on sterilization cart/rack to ensure proper sterilization
  • Documents each sterilization load in Censitrac
  • PERFORMANCE OF INVENTORY/STORAGE/DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS
  • Receives supplies from storeroom and outside vendors
  • Places supplies received on the proper shelves
  • Returns unused sterile trays and single peel pack items to appropriate shelf
  • Places sterilized items in appropriate areas for distribution
  • Assists with cleaning storage areas
  • CASE CART ASSEMBLY
  • Assembles case carts for MOR, ASC, and L&D according to the preference card
  • Notes missing supplies and/or instruments
  • Scans MOR and ASC instruments to the case cart
  • Delivers case carts to the unit
  • DECONTAMINATION OF BASIC INSTRUMENTS
  • Wears proper PPE when performing duties in Decontamination area
  • Cleans basic instrument trays
  • Able to load and run washer/decontaminator and case cart washer
  • BASIC INSTRUMENT ASSEMBLY
  • Able to assemble basic instrument trays with minimal supervision
  • Ability to assemble/package items from ancillary areas
  • Maintain a neat and clean workstation
  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS
  • Comprehends written and verbal instructions
  • Communicates appropriately with staff and customers
  • Able to document appropriately
  • Collaborates with co-workers to prioritize workload
  • Identifies own learning needs and uses resources provided
  • Gives and receives productive feedback
  • Answers department phone in a timely and courteous manner

Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • 1 year SPD experience preferred, but will consider having no experience if SPD course has been completed and able to sit for the exam within 1 year of employment
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and follow directions
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergent situations
  • Strength/dexterity to handle surgical instruments/equipment
  • Ability to access all areas of the department
  • Hepatitis vaccination at hire

  • Follow strict health and safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination
  • Ensure that the work environment is kept clean and free from contaminants
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals and departments to prioritise and process decontamination requests in a timely manner
  • Assist in maintaining stock levels of cleaning and sterilisation supplies and ensure the proper storage of instruments and equipment
