The Center for STEM Excellence at Eastern Kentucky University seeks to hire students from any major as Learning Assistants. Learning Assistants (LAs) will support student learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses. LAs work on-campus with students one-on-one, in small groups, and may facilitate workshops on problem-solving strategies, study skills, exam preparation, and related topics. Some LAs may be assigned up to three sections of an undergraduate STEM lecture or laboratory course and will work with the instructor and STEM Center Personnel to facilitate in-class and/or out-of-class learning experiences. Specific duties will vary based on the course, the LA’s areas of expertise, and students’ learning needs. Additional duties will include active participation in weekly staff meetings, active participation in professional development workshops, and some tutoring in their preferred subject area(s). The STEM Center offers flexible scheduling to work with your course schedules. At this time, we are hiring LAs to support the following courses: Anatomy and Physiology laboratories - BIO 208 (Formerly BIO 307), BIO 308; Nursing Dosage Calculation Workshops - NSC 114, 232, 380 (No nursing background needed - a background in chemistry, math, or physics is sufficient); Algebra - MAT 112; Chemistry - CHE 105, 111, 112; Other STEM courses at the discretion of the course instructor and STEM Center staff. Requirements
Applicants must be full-time students at EKU
have completed at least one General Education II course (Quantitative Reasoning) or General Education IV course (Natural Sciences)
be in good academic standing with the University
A successful candidate will also possess strong understanding of 100-level course content in at least one area of science, technology, engineering, or math
an interest in cultivating student learning in STEM
strong communication skills
a passion for working with students
willingness to be an energetic and reliable student representative of the Center for STEM Excellence
A minimum GPA of 2.8 is preferred
