Job Description:

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the operation of all central energy plant utility systems, including high-pressure steam boilers, hot-water boilers, heat-recovery chillers, centrifugal refrigeration chillers, cooling towers, centrifugal air compressors, medical compressed air, and HVAC systems. The Stationary Engineer must have multi-craft skills (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) and be able to troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of equipment. The Stationary Engineer is expected to complete preventive maintenance on equipment and identify/implement continuous improvement opportunities.

Job Responsibility:

  • Responsible for the operation of all central energy plant utility systems, including high-pressure steam boilers, hot-water boilers, heat-recovery chillers, centrifugal refrigeration chillers, cooling towers, centrifugal air compressors, medical compressed air, and HVAC systems
  • Must have multi-craft skills (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) and be able to troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of equipment
  • Expected to complete preventive maintenance on equipment and identify/implement continuous improvement opportunities
  • Maintain the safe and efficient operation of equipment
  • Adjust controls to ensure safe, efficient operation of systems to meet facility demands
  • Log various aspects of the system’s operation
  • Monitor and log temperature, hours of operation, fuel consumption, and water levels
  • Feed chemicals and caustics into systems and devices, then record and report actions taken
  • Observe the results of water tests
  • May direct and coordinate activities of other workers
  • Respond to calls for emergency repairs
  • Conduct routine inspections of mechanical equipment
  • Perform minor repairs or replace broken or worn parts on mechanical equipment
  • Maintain logs of all completed work
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area
  • Study manuals and journals to increase technical competency
  • Have expertise in mechanical, electrical, and control systems to identify and repair equipment issues
  • Follow safety and LOTO procedures
  • Conduct routine audits of operating equipment
  • Maintain open, professional communication with associates
  • Conduct routine maintenance activities
  • Inspect and monitor equipment condition
  • Spot and pursue improvement opportunities
  • Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and/or planned work orders
  • Provide assistance during routine shutdowns
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on the mechanical production and distribution systems
  • Maintain inspection and testing records
  • Assess the condition of MEP systems and recommend actions for repair or replacement
  • Assist outside contractors performing scheduled maintenance or repairs
  • Respond to emergency events, assess the situation, and take appropriate action to stabilize the situation
  • Trace out proposed utility service shutdowns, identify affected areas, and initiate shutdowns and reactivation
  • Monitor outside contractor repairs and record observed deficiencies on the punch list
  • Participate in new system start-up, training, and commissioning

Requirements:

  • Must hold a Maryland Grade 1 Stationary Engineer license
  • Must be able to pass the Federal background check required for this job site
  • Ability to perform work safely under hazardous conditions
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair most complex problems
  • Better-than-average knowledge of software programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High school graduate
  • technical or trade school certificate in a related field desired
  • Basic construction knowledge
  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop, and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, and perform constant arm extensions

  • Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures
  • Operates all campus heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment including boilers, steam absorption and centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, fans, pumps and systems in a manner that optimizes efficiency, safety, and occupant comfort per department policies and procedures with minimal to no guidance/assistance
  • Maintains accurate records and reports on all equipment startup, failures, problems, work in progress and completed work through logbooks and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) with minimal to no guidance/assistance
  • Advanced level of skill to utilize BAS as a tool for both monitoring and controlling HVAC equipment. Responds to alarms in a timely and correct manner. Optimizes operation using trending reports as appropriate
  • Advanced level of skill to perform preventive maintenance on HVAC and other equipment as assigned per established procedures including inspection, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, testing, flushing, minor repairs, rebuilding and replacing parts/components to ensure that systems remain within the established operating parameters
  • Advanced level of skill to troubleshoot complex issues with HVAC equipment determine the root cause in a timely manner. Executes repairs or installations with minimal impact to the hospital and patient care. Appropriately requests assistance as warranted by the situation
  • Intermediate knowledge of medical gas systems
  • Responds to building occupant complaints in a timely and professional manner and takes appropriate corrective action. Keeps requester appraised of the status of corrective action
  • Maintains current daily logs, preventive maintenance records and equipment repair files to comply with local, state and federal regulatory requirements with minimal to no direction
  • Performs routine general maintenance including painting, plumbing, carpentry, equipment testing and repair, ventilation, lighting, electrical, groundskeeping and snow removal. Performs repairs on a large variety of facility systems such as mechanical, electrical, building systems and other critical systems with minimal to no guidance/assistance Provides timely and proper response to assigned service calls, work orders and preventative maintenance to maintain a safe and efficient environment. Documents all tasks and work time on the CMMS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Experience leading an Engineering group within a highly regulated manufacturing environment
  • Project engineering/management from design to implementation
  • Experience in leading diverse technical resources across a complex organization
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, developing and leading a team of technical people
  • Minimum of 8 years’ technical leadership (e.g. Engineering, Maintenance, Operations) and project management experience in a highly regulated environment
  • High degree of innovation, skill and proficiency in various broad phases of engineering
  • Ability to manage through a matrix environment to achieve results in a timely manner
  • Process oriented and customer focused
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, negotiation skills, ability to work with all levels of the organization

  • Manage process engineers, Automation team, critical systems and Facilities with 15 direct reports
  • Create and maintain an environment where team members experience personal and professional growth and become a more self-directed team through regular feedback and coaching
  • Responsible for ensuring project implementation, and improvements are executed in a timely, efficient manner to support plant goals of OEE, Project Deadlines, safety, quality, and cost
  • Responsible for overall management (including multi-million-dollar budgets) of project timelines associated with generating equipment design specifications, procurement, design of experiments, factory acceptance testing, installation, coordination of validation activities, standard operating procedure (SOP) generation, and implementation in functional areas
  • Provide review and approval of Engineering Work Orders, Master Change Controls, Exception Reports, Technical Summaries, Validation protocols, expense approvals and Capital Requests
  • Lead the capital planning process and create business cases and CER’s as required for presentation to senior leadership
  • Establish project requirements, vendor contracts, design and implementation plans in conjunction with other plant stakeholders
  • Oversee and develop capital equipment budgets, value improvement projects and equipment/process optimization
  • Ensure departmental compliance with change controls and validation protocols
  • Utilize Lean principles to manage the successful completion of departmental tasks within the boundaries of safety, quality, time, and budget
