The Illinois Department of Central Management Services Bureau of Property Management is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer who receives day-to-day assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer for Central Management Services operated facilities within the Chicago Loop and Northern Region, including the Michael A. Bilandic Building and other assigned facilities. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to making rounds of buildings’ boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals, testing, and recording water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems, and adding appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems such as chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers. This position will also confer with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services and assist other CMS facilities in the Region with the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment.
Job Responsibility:
Receives day-to-day assignments from Chief Stationary Engineer for CMS operated facilities for the Chicago South Loop and other facilities in the Chicago and Northern Region
Makes rounds of buildings’ boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals
Tests and records water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems, and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems including chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers
Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services
Assists other CMS facilities in the Region in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment
Performs other duties as required or assigned
Requirements:
Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school
Four years’ experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers
Possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules
Completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history
Ability to travel in the performance of duties
Valid driver’s license
Possession and maintaining of a City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License
Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and heights up to 25 feet above ground
Ability to maneuver and work in crawl spaces, work outdoors, and work from rooftops
Ability to use agency technology/equipment properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines
Nice to have:
Working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure and/or low-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their auxiliaries
Extensive knowledge of performing repairs and maintaining HVAC systems, heating and cooling equipment and machinery
Elementary knowledge of the power plant operations and electrical generating equipment
Working knowledge of handling chemicals in the maintenance of systems
Working knowledge of keeping written logs of daily operations
Three (3) years’ professional experience following oral and/or written instructions effectively
Three (3) years’ professional experience operating hand and power tools effectively
Working knowledge of reading and understanding mechanical blueprints/floor plans and technical equipment manuals
