Job Description

A Standardized Patient (SP) is an individual carefully trained to portray the characteristics of a patient, family member, health care team member, etc., for the purpose of training and/or assessing health care students and professionals. SPs are interviewed and/or undergo physical examination by healthcare trainees or professionals, utilizing scripted materials to portray the specifics of a patient or scenario. SPs are also an integral part of the learner assessment process, often providing constructive written and verbal feedback, from a patient’s perspective.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or the equivalent
  • 6 months of work or volunteer experience (preferred)
  • Experience in theatre, a medical field or education (preferred)
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Ability to receive instruction and consistently simulate a case scenario in an accurate, reliable and professional manner
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Strong reading and writing skills to absorb and use the detailed case training and exam procedural information
  • Ability to accurately portray a wide range of roles and scenarios, and to remain in character throughout the interaction with the learner
  • Fluency in more than one language
  • Organization, reliability and punctuality
  • Willing and able to work a varied, flexible schedule (preferred)
