Job Description

Join us in building the future of finance. Our mission is to democratize finance for all. The Trading Tools team’s mission is to build and evolve the core trading capabilities for active investors—powering best-in-class research, charting, portfolio management, and execution, while rapidly integrating AI to deliver precise, personalized, and trusted trading experiences at massive scale. As Staff Backend Engineer, you’ll lead the technical direction of Robinhood’s trading tools, including the systems that power the front page of the app—Robinhood’s most visited and most visible surface. This platform drives how millions of investors discover markets, track their portfolios, research investments, and place trades every day. This role sits at the intersection of product innovation, platform engineering, and applied AI—owning both what we build and how we build it.

Job Responsibility

  • Own the technical vision and execution for a highly visible, mission-critical area of Robinhood’s trading experience, including the app’s front page
  • Design, build, and operate the core services that power Portfolio, Watchlists, and Stock Detail pages, serving real-time market data, portfolio insights, and personalized content at scale
  • Design and evolve high-performance, low-latency systems that support real-time trading, market data, and discovery for millions of daily users
  • Remain deeply hands-on, writing production code, leading complex implementations, and setting the standard for engineering quality across the platform
  • Lead the integration of AI-driven capabilities into core trading, portfolio, and discovery workflows
  • Balance trading depth with usability, ensuring sophisticated functionality remains fast, intuitive, and accessible
  • Drive technical excellence across reliability, correctness, observability, and security in a highly regulated environment
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to shape the roadmap for one of the highest-traffic surfaces in the company
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through design reviews, architecture discussions, and hands-on leadership
  • Influence platform direction beyond your immediate team, aligning with adjacent orgs and company-wide initiatives

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale, distributed systems in production environments
  • Expertise in backend development using languages such as Go, Python, or Java, with deep knowledge of cloud-native architectures
  • 3+ years leading large-scale technical initiatives, with ownership spanning multiple teams or complex systems
  • Strong grasp of system design, data modeling, and software engineering fundamentals
  • Proven ability to simplify complex problems, make sound tradeoffs, and drive alignment across diverse stakeholders
  • Strong ownership mindset with a track record of delivering high-impact, end-to-end product outcomes and raising team-wide technical standards
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing engineers, fostering technical excellence and long-term career growth

What we offer

  • Performance driven compensation with multipliers for outsized impact, bonus programs, equity ownership, and 401(k) matching
  • 100% paid health insurance for employees with 90% coverage for dependents
  • Lifestyle wallet - a highly flexible benefits spending account for wellness, learning, and more
  • Employer-paid life & disability insurance, fertility benefits, and mental health benefits
  • Time off to recharge including company holidays, paid time off, sick time, parental leave, and more
  • Exceptional office experience with catered meals, events, and comfortable workspaces
