Ward 35 is a dynamic, fast-paced ward, specialising in emergency and elective General Surgery, ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat), and Urology care. As a Band 5 Staff Nurse, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support patients throughout their surgical journey from admission and pre-operative preparation to post-operative recovery and discharge planning. In this role, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualised care while ensuring patient safety and maintaining high professional standards. You will develop strong clinical skills in areas such as wound care, pain management, enhanced recovery, and acute post-operative monitoring. The surgical ward environment offers an excellent opportunity to expand your clinical knowledge, build confidence in managing complex cases, and progress within a supportive and dynamic team. You will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills, working collaboratively with colleagues to provide holistic care. As a Band 5 nurse, you will also contribute to maintaining a positive learning culture on the ward by supporting junior staff, student nurses, and healthcare assistants.
Job Responsibility:
Perform holistic assessments of patients on admission and throughout their stay
Develop, implement, and regularly evaluate individualised care plans
Identify and act upon changes in a patients clinical condition, escalating concerns promptly
Provide direct nursing care, including post-operative monitoring, wound care, pain management, IV therapy, and catheter care
Administer medications safely in line with trust policies and the NMC Code
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all care delivered
Monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and early signs of deterioration
Assist with the management of surgical drains, dressings, and enhanced recovery protocols
Support patients with mobility, nutrition, and rehabilitation following surgery
Adhere to infection prevention and control standards
Safely use clinical equipment and report any faults promptly
Participate in risk assessments, incident reporting, and safeguarding processes
Communicate clearly with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team
Provide handovers in accordance with SBAR or local protocols
Work collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and other professionals to coordinate safe patient care
