As a Cloud FinOps Engineer, you are responsible for collecting and analyzing data related to the organization’s cloud and SaaS expenses, seeking ways to improve the accuracy of forecasting, budgets and implementing savings. You will work as part of a team to implement and maintain FinOps practices and methodologies, with a focus on analyzing cloud usage and spending data to identify areas for cost optimization. Additionally, you are responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of cloud strategies for services within our various cloud environments, including guidance on deployment best practices, governance, and cost-management policies. To succeed in this role, you must possess excellent analytical skills to translate complex cloud spending data into actionable insights and recommendations.
Job Responsibility:
Closely partner with Engineering teams to analyze cloud and SaaS data, spend trends to identify cost optimization and improved usage opportunities and create specific recommendations
Responsible for and input into the design and adherence to quality controls centered around FinOps
Work with the teams to ensure proper tagging and allocation of cloud resources for accurate cost tracking and reporting (both initially and ongoing)
Create FinOps focused knowledge articles/documentation and promote FinOps best practices/concepts to arm and empower teams
Recommend and/or implement strategies to optimize costs, such as right-sizing resources, purchasing reserved instances or savings plans, and shutting down unused resources
Provide input into and assist with the monitoring and reporting on cloud usage against budget and forecast, explore trends in cloud and SaaS spend. Assist with detecting, investigating, and escalating anomalies and unplanned spikes
Create reports, dashboards and alerts to track spending and usage trends and the potential impact of cost optimizations
Where required, assist in implementing, maintaining and governing the FinOps practice
Keep up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to FinOps
Implement a mechanism to attribute cloud and SaaS spends back to individual departments, projects, or teams
Recommend and/or implement automatic cost optimization strategies, such as shutting down non-production environments outside of working hours
Recommend and/or implement governance mechanisms to prevent wasteful resources
Collaborate with cloud and SaaS service providers to understand pricing models and discount opportunities
Where appropriate, negotiate contracts and pricing with vendors to ensure cost-effectiveness
Input into the mediation between competing technical priorities across teams
Requirements:
2+ years of experience in Cloud FinOps engineering analysis and Cloud cost optimization
4+ years in cloud operations role managing Cloud environments, budgets, forecasts and implementing financial controls
Strong principles of financial analysis
Proven analytical skills and experience with cost optimization
Working knowledge of the public cloud providers
Ability to query, transform, analyze and summarize data efficiently and accurately
Ability to communicate effectively and deliver presentations
Excellent SQL querying, Excel and PowerPoint skills
Understanding of cloud cost management tools
Experienced in containerized environments, microservices, Terraform and serverless
Experience in one or more automation/development languages (PowerShell, Command Line Interface, Python)
Solid understanding of application architecture, network technologies, and infrastructure architecture
Experience working on multi-million-dollar environments
Cost savings and cost optimization mindset
Ability to drive savings
