Job Description:

As a Staff Rails Developer at 1Password, you'll define technical roadmaps, lead architectural decisions, and enhance endpoint security. You'll design scalable data solutions, develop APIs, and mentor engineers. Collaborating in a remote-first environment, you'll push user experience boundaries and leave a lasting impact on digital security.

Job Responsibility:

  • Own the design and implementation of core systems, influencing project success and course correcting as necessary, to ensure scalability and alignment with 1Password’s broader technical goals
  • Drive the development of APIs, authentication systems, and customer-facing UI, ensuring seamless integration with other 1Password services
  • Implement enhancements using modern Rails features like Hotwire, Stimulus, and Turbo to improve the reactivity of web applications
  • Solve complex technical problems both directly and through others
  • Serve as a technical leader and mentor across the organization, setting engineering best practices, guiding architectural decisions, and fostering a culture of innovation
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, influencing decisions that impact company-wide initiatives and unifying approach to security, performance, and user experience
  • Collaborate with product, design, and security leaders on cross-functional projects
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Rotate through 'on-call' responsibilities to help review PRs, assist other engineers, and provide technical support

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience building and scaling complex SaaS platforms with Ruby on Rails, with a proven track record of leading technical initiatives and delivering impactful results
  • Deep expertise in database architecture and optimization, with the ability to design and implement scalable data solutions that meet the demands of a growing global user base
  • Strong communicator, who can convey technical details clearly, both in documentation and when interacting with customers or less technical colleagues
  • Experience building and scaling applications, particularly with a focus on performance and reliability
  • Drive projects to successful completion, ensuring they meet quality standards, deadlines, and deliverables
  • Lead and support senior engineers through solving some of the hardest problems at 1Password
  • Focus on customer needs to push the boundaries of user experience that 1Password has become known for

Nice to have:

  • An advocate for modern Rails practices and a thought leader in the ecosystem, contributing to open-source projects, speaking at conferences, or publishing insights that advance the field
  • A background in security or IT is beneficial, and you enjoy simplifying complex technical concepts for end-users
