This is an opportunity to do meaningful, mission-driven work while gaining hands-on experience in grievance arbitration, disciplinary proceedings, and collective bargaining in a unionized environment. The Staff Attorney will represent members in a wide range of labor and employment matters, with a strong emphasis on grievance handling, arbitration, and disciplinary defense. The role also includes advising union leadership and supporting contract negotiations and administration.
Job Responsibility:
Represent members in grievance procedures, including arbitration and disciplinary hearings
Provide legal counsel on collective bargaining agreements, workplace policies, and employment disputes
Advise leadership, representatives, and stewards on labor and employment law matters
Support collective bargaining negotiations and contract administration
Handle disciplinary cases, including warnings, suspensions, demotions, and terminations
Ensure enforcement of “just cause” standards in workplace discipline
Conduct legal research and draft briefs, memoranda, and related legal documents
Assist with training efforts related to employee rights and grievance procedures
Requirements:
J.D. from an accredited law school
Licensed to practice law in Minnesota
2–5+ years of labor and employment law experience (union-side experience preferred
a mix of private practice and public sector experience is welcome)
Experience with grievance arbitration, collective bargaining, and administrative hearings strongly preferred
Strong litigation, negotiation, and advocacy skills
Excellent research, writing, and communication abilities
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated commitment to advancing workers’ rights and fair labor practices
