Job Description

The Staff Attorney will provide full‑scope immigration representation, including in‑person and virtual court appearances, from intake through resolution. The position requires hands‑on client advocacy, collaboration with colleagues, and ongoing engagement with changes in immigration law and policy.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide direct representation in removal defense and affirmative immigration matters, including asylum, U Visa, T Visa, SIJS, VAWA, TPS, family‑based immigration, naturalization, and DACA
  • Conduct full legal screenings, case preparation, filings, court appearances, USCIS interviews, hearings, and follow‑up work
  • Represent non‑detained clients before Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and, as applicable, U.S. District and Circuit Courts
  • Maintain detailed, timely case notes and client communications in compliance with organizational and funding requirements
  • Monitor and adapt to changes in immigration law, regulations, and procedures
  • Participate in case strategy meetings, trainings, and required staff meetings
  • Make referrals for additional legal or social services when client needs exceed the scope of representation
  • Represent the organization at community events, outreach efforts, and educational programs as requested
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • JD required
  • Active membership in good standing with the Illinois Bar
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, organizational, and communication skills

  • Identify, investigate, develop and litigate high-impact civil rights and civil liberties cases involving federal government entities or government overreach in federal and state court
  • Write appellate and amicus curiae briefs.
  • Supervise, lead, or staff litigation teams of associated attorneys
  • co-counsel cases with other public interest groups and the national ACLU staff.
  • Contribute to case selection, formulating legal strategy, and identifying the ACLU's litigation priorities.
  • Recruit and work successfully with ACLU volunteer attorneys.
  • Respond to interview requests from reporters, write editorials and blogs, and contribute to social media about cases the staff attorney is involved in.
  • Work with ACLU staff to implement integrated advocacy campaigns and high-impact strategies utilizing the ACLU's communication, legislative, community organizing and legal programs.
  • Engage with coalition partners, policymakers, and community groups working on similar issues.
  • Demonstrate leadership by initiating cases, projects and programs that are sensitive to community needs, are inclusive, and expand the ACLU's network of supporters.
