We are looking for a dedicated Staff Accountant to join our team in the Syracuse, New York area. In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring accurate financial management and reporting. This long-term contract position offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful programs while developing your accounting expertise.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee the organization’s day‑to‑day financial activity, ensuring accuracy and adherence to internal and external requirements
Handle payroll processing to guarantee employees are paid correctly and on schedule
Reconcile company credit card activity on a routine basis to maintain accurate financial records
Manage incoming and outgoing payments to support healthy cash flow
Prepare and post journal entries as part of the month‑end close
Maintain up‑to‑date and accurate balance sheet reconciliations
Review accounts and support budgeting efforts to aid organizational planning
Manage monthly fixed asset activity, including depreciation, additions, disposals, and related inventory tracking
Assist with gathering documentation and preparing schedules for annual audits and tax-related needs
Maintain detailed financial data using accounting systems, with an emphasis on MIP
Support the development and refinement of procedures that enhance reporting efficiency and long-term sustainability
Provide administrative support related to employee benefits
Organize and maintain document retention systems
Keep personnel records accurate and current
Build a strong understanding of internal workflows, reporting requirements, and organizational processes
Work collaboratively with accounting colleagues and other departments to ensure compliance and alignment with company objectives
Communicate clearly across teams to support effective coordination
Perform additional tasks as assigned by leadership
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline required
1–2 years of detail oriented accounting experience
Excellent organization and attention to detail
Ability to learn and apply nonprofit accounting standards and reporting practices
Foundational understanding of general ledger processes and account reconciliations
Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook
Experience with MIP or comparable accounting software
Flexible and open to taking on new tasks as needs evolve
Effective communicator and supportive team contributor
Demonstrates professionalism, respect, and the ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Nice to have:
Payroll experience is a plus
Familiarity with managing AP/AR functions
Experience in a nonprofit environment is an advantage
