Job Description:

We are looking for a skilled Staff Accountant to join our team in Portales, New Mexico. In this role, you will play a vital part in managing payroll, accounts payable, and other financial operations while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to budget development, financial reporting, and audits, all within a dynamic and detail-oriented environment.

Job Responsibility:

  • Process bi-weekly payroll and ensure payroll tax reporting and filings are completed accurately and on time
  • Manage accounts payable, including reviewing vendor bills and distributing expenses across departments
  • Assist with the annual budget planning process, including development, submission, and monitoring of departmental spending
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports for various projects, programs, and audits
  • Reconcile state and federal reports, such as quarterly returns, 941 filings, and year-end W-2/W-3 submissions
  • Oversee journal entries, cash disbursements, and general ledger postings to maintain accurate financial records
  • Facilitate asset management programs and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Manage contracts and related documentation, ensuring proper execution and oversight
  • Collaborate with auditors during financial audits and contribute to year-end close-out reports
  • Handle Public Employee Retirement Association payments, reconcile reports, and address inquiries or audit requests

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and budgeting, preferably in a government setting
  • Proficient in financial management systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, and Oracle
  • Strong understanding of general ledger management, journal entries, and month-end close processes
  • Experience in preparing and reconciling financial reports, including bank reconciliations and vendor payments
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to collaborate effectively with various departments and stakeholders
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license
