Job Description

We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant in Norfolk, Virginia. This role is vital to maintaining accurate financial records and supporting various accounting operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounts payable, financial reporting, and reconciliation processes, along with a commitment to ensuring compliance and accuracy in all aspects of the role.

Job Responsibility

  • Process and review weekly accounts payable vouchers, ensuring accuracy and timely submission
  • Coordinate the distribution of checks to internal departments and schedule approvals for high-value transactions
  • Prepare journal entries for reclassifications, transfers, and monthly contributions related to designated funds
  • Reconcile assigned bank accounts monthly, ensuring alignment with the general ledger and submitting reports for review
  • Generate fund balance reports for departments and donors, fulfilling requests with precision
  • File and update annual 1099 forms electronically while verifying data accuracy before final review
  • Assist in creating quarterly and annual financial reports for organizational units and endowment activities
  • Provide administrative support during quarterly board and committee meetings and contribute to special projects
  • Prepare audit-related documentation, including vendor listings, aging reports, and year-end accrual entries
  • Support leadership initiatives and complete assigned tasks to enhance operational efficiency

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, with a focus on accounts payable and financial reporting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and report generation
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud or similar financial management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to reconcile bank statements and maintain accurate records
  • Experience preparing audit schedules and reports to meet compliance standards
  • Strong organizational skills to manage expense vouchers and high-volume transactions
  • Ability to generate detailed reports, including aging reports and donor statements
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining financial accuracy
