We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our team in Portland, Maine. This role is essential in supporting daily accounting operations, with a focus on bank reconciliations, cash flow management, and financial analysis. The ideal candidate will contribute to maintaining fiscal accuracy and transparency while ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Job Responsibility:
Perform accounts payable and accounts receivable tasks with precision and efficiency
Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual bank reconciliations, promptly addressing and resolving any discrepancies
Monitor and analyze daily cash flows to ensure operational funding is adequate and forecast financial needs
Prepare and review journal entries while assisting with month-end closing processes to ensure compliance with accounting principles
Collaborate in the preparation of financial statements and other key reports
Work closely with program, clinical, and administrative teams to ensure accurate transaction recording and reporting
Support annual audit processes, including documentation and communication with external auditors
Maintain organized and clear documentation for reconciliations, cash transactions, and financial analyses
Assist with tax-related tasks including corporate tax returns, sales tax, and compliance requirements
Contribute to the maintenance of the general ledger by ensuring transactions are accurately recorded
Requirements:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting, with a preference for nonprofit or healthcare sector experience
Proficiency in bank reconciliations, cash flow analysis, and general accounting principles
Familiarity with fund accounting, grants management, and healthcare accounting standards
Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software like QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or Blackbaud
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a commitment to accuracy and ethical practices
Excellent communication and organizational skills to collaborate across departments
Knowledge of corporate tax, sales tax, and tax return preparation processes
