We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join a growing accounting team supporting a real estate portfolio in California. This contract opportunity with potential for a permanent role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning core accounting activities, contributing to accurate financial reporting, and working across multiple entities and properties. The role offers the chance to partner with property management contacts, external accounting resources, and internal leadership while helping maintain strong financial controls and organized records.
Job Responsibility
Manage recurring close activities by preparing journal entries, recording accruals, and completing account reconciliations for month-end and year-end reporting
Oversee general ledger accuracy for multiple properties and related entities, ensuring balances are properly recorded and supported
Prepare bank reconciliations and monitor cash transactions to help maintain reliable reporting of daily and monthly activity
Contribute to the production of periodic financial statements, supporting monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting needs
Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable tasks, including processing vendor-related activity and coordinating tenant billing support
Analyze property operating results, research fluctuations, and follow up on unusual variances with the appropriate teams
Reconcile tenant security deposits, reserve balances, and other property-level accounts requiring detailed tracking
Support audit preparation, tax-related documentation, lender reporting, budgeting support, and maintenance of accounting policies, records, and data files
Work closely with property management, operations staff, and outsourced accounting partners to address accounting questions and keep financial processes running smoothly
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
At least 2 years of accounting experience in a business environment that requires strong attention to detail
Working knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
Prior exposure to real estate or property management accounting is preferred
Experience using accounting or property management platforms, with Yardi considered a strong advantage
Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to work with formulas and structured spreadsheets
Strong attention to detail, sound organizational habits, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively
Effective analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
Nice to have
Prior exposure to real estate or property management accounting is preferred
Experience using accounting or property management platforms, with Yardi considered a strong advantage
