Job Description:

The SSHO will work with the Superintendent and Project Manager to administer, direct, and implement compliance with USACE EM 385-1-1, Federal and State safety and health regulations and corporate safety and health policies and procedures. This position is responsible for the overall safety procedures on a project specific level. The SSHO reports directly to the Project Manager and the Director of Operations.

Job Responsibility:

  • Conduct daily safety and health inspections and maintain a written log which includes area/operation inspected, date of inspection, identified hazards, recommended corrective actions, estimated and actual dates of corrections
  • Conduct mishap investigations and complete required reports
  • Attend the pre-construction conference, pre-work meetings including preparatory inspection meeting, and periodic in-progress meetings
  • Maintain a safety and health deficiency tracking system and monitor outstanding deficiencies
  • Track and review all licenses, training, certifications and medical evaluations
  • Perform a daily toolbox safety meeting for all activities
  • Communicate issues, events, performance and progress
  • Implement safety measurements/metrics for tracking and reporting safety performance
  • Conduct 'new hire' safety orientations onsite

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of related work experience in the construction industry with a general contractor engaged in general building construction working on projects for federal construction in the field of Construction Health and Safety, preferably on VA projects
  • Combination of high school diploma with safety experience and certifications will be considered
  • Demonstrated expertise with construction and safety technologies and practices
  • Able to coordinate safety efforts with field staff and external partners
  • Current OSHA 30 certification (within last 5 years)
  • Knowledge of Federal and State safety and health regulations and working knowledge of USACE EM385-1-1
  • Clear decision-making ability with the facility to judge complex situations and assess when to escalate issues
  • Proven injury management experience
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • CPR/AED/FA certifications
