Our client, a prestigious local firm is seeking a Sr. Tax Manager to lead and oversee a growing tax practice within a public accounting environment. This key leadership role is responsible for managing all aspects of the tax department, including compliance, planning, client advisory services, team development, operational performance, and strategic growth initiatives. The ideal candidate is a technically strong tax professional with demonstrated leadership experience in public accounting. This individual will bring a proactive, client-focused approach, strong management capabilities, and the ability to drive both departmental excellence and firmwide success.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead and manage the tax department, including workflow oversight, staffing, scheduling, and day-to-day operations
  • Establish and implement departmental goals, processes, and best practices to improve efficiency, quality, and profitability
  • Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws to ensure ongoing compliance and technical excellence
  • Partner with firm leadership on strategic planning, growth initiatives, staffing, and expansion of service offerings
  • Champion continuous improvement and adoption of technology within the tax function
  • Manage a portfolio of tax clients and serve as a trusted advisor on complex tax matters
  • Review and approve complex tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations
  • Provide high-level tax planning, consulting, and advisory services across a variety of industries
  • Research and resolve complex tax issues, communicating recommendations clearly to clients and internal teams
  • Represent clients before taxing authorities during audits, examinations, and disputes as needed
  • Identify opportunities for expanded services and contribute to business development efforts
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop tax managers, senior associates, staff accountants, and interns
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and technical training
  • Build and maintain a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team culture
  • Ensure effective delegation and review processes to uphold quality standards and meet deadlines
  • Support recruiting, interviewing, and hiring for the tax department
  • Oversee engagement budgeting, billing, realization, and departmental profitability

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Active CPA license required
  • 8+ years of progressive tax experience within public accounting
  • Deep experience reviewing complex tax returns and developing tax planning strategies
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and multistate taxation
  • Proven leadership, organizational, and team management skills
  • Excellent communication, client service, and interpersonal abilities
  • Proficiency with tax preparation, research, and workflow management software
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in Taxation or related field preferred
  • 3–5+ years of management or department leadership experience preferred
  • Experience leading a tax department or practice area within a public accounting firm
  • Background serving closely held businesses and high-net-worth individuals
  • Experience with tax advisory, succession planning, and business consulting services
  • Familiarity with cloud-based accounting systems and workflow automation tools
