Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Sr Payroll Tax Analyst to support payroll tax operations for a large, multi-state workforce based in Memphis, Tennessee. This Long-term Contract position focuses on strengthening payroll tax compliance, improving process efficiency, and providing expert guidance on tax regulations, reporting, and issue resolution. The role will partner closely with payroll, finance, tax, and business leaders to maintain accurate tax setup, support filings, and address complex payroll tax matters.

Job Responsibility:

  • Review payroll processing and tax filing activity to confirm accurate withholding, reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and external service providers to ensure payroll tax transactions and filings are administered correctly and on schedule.
  • Research new and changing tax laws, assess operational impact, and recommend updates to policies, controls, and procedures.
  • Validate payroll system tax configurations and reconcile tax accounts against remittances and related payroll records.
  • Lead or support payroll tax initiatives, including third-party system implementations, upgrades, and process enhancement efforts.
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee payroll tax questions and coordinate responses with tax agencies when needed.
  • Produce and analyze reports related to payroll tax payments, liabilities, and overall payroll expenditures for management review.
  • Identify workflow gaps and develop practical improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, and service quality across payroll tax operations.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced team members and share subject matter expertise on complex payroll tax issues.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of payroll tax experience, including responsibility for multi-state payroll tax administration in large employee populations of at least 5,000 workers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant payroll tax experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of payroll tax compliance, tax account reconciliation, tax filings, and regulatory research.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate business processes, identify control gaps, and recommend effective operational improvements.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word
  • experience with Access or Visio is preferred.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across payroll, finance, leadership, and external partners.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with a high degree of discretion, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Workday and related payroll systems is preferred.

  • Lead payroll and absence release activities in Workday, including regression planning, test execution, documentation of outcomes, and recommendations for adoption of new functionality
  • Coordinate settlement and payment control activities with treasury partners, maintain approval evidence, and investigate discrepancies involving bank files and related transactions
  • Support compliance efforts by reinforcing internal controls, maintaining segregation of duties, conducting periodic access reviews, and preserving documentation for audit purposes
  • Resolve complex payroll system and data issues by performing detailed analysis, identifying root causes, and partnering with cross-functional teams on sustainable corrective actions
  • Maintain operating procedures, configuration inventories, runbooks, and validation materials, and provide guidance to payroll operations teams on updated processes and controls
  • Translate business needs into effective system solutions, manage payroll-related initiatives, and design templates for large-scale data updates with a focus on format accuracy and successful processing
