GM is seeking a Sr. Environmental Leader who is passionate about leading the environmental operations at Oshawa Assembly. As a Senior Environmental Engineer at the Oshawa Assembly plant, you will have the opportunity to lead environmental compliance activities and will be responsible for developing programs to reduce environmental risk and improve operational efficiency. The successful candidate will work as part of the Global Environmental Operations organization, and alongside various manufacturing and facilities departments to support all environmental media. They will engage with subject matter experts and plant personnel to develop and implement solutions to improve environmental performance and reduce risk. They will ensure new and existing equipment is properly evaluated for compliance and conformance requirements and support routine and periodic testing. The Sr. Environmental Leader will contribute to the team’s knowledge of environmental compliance requirements.
Job Responsibility:
Ensure the site meets all Environmental Compliance Approval requirements as it relates to equipment operating conditions, emissions modeling (ESDM), change management, and regulatory reporting
Review and validate new chemicals or process changes meet regulatory guidelines
Track completion of preventative maintenance on key equipment
Complete and submit required regulatory reports such as NPRI and GHG
Provide contract management oversight to the sites Chemical Manager including safety oversight, annual budgeting, invoice tracking and more
Ensure the site meets all Environmental Compliance Approval requirements as it relates to waste management
Provide contract management oversite to the sites Resource Manager including safety oversight, annual budgeting, invoice tracking and more
Ensure all waste being generated as part of the manufacturing operation is characterized and shipped in accordance with provincial and federal regulations
Ship soil in accordance with Ontario soil management regulations
Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives that improve the sites diversion rate, drive down non-diverted waste totals, and help meet the site’s Zero Waste objectives
Ensure the site meets all Environmental Compliance Approval requirements as it relates to storm water management
Execute storm and sanitary water sampling and analyze results to validate compliance
Completion and submission of stormwater, wastewater, and sanitary water regulatory reports
Provide environmental support to the on-site WWTP
Maintain the sites certified ISO14001 Environmental Management System
Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives, employee environmental training, and develop standardized work as it relates to the site’s significant environmental aspects
Schedule and lead both internal and external ISO14001 audits, tracking any findings to completion
Maintain the sites robust library of Task Instruction Sheets, Procedures, and Forms associated with the EMS
Ensure the site is in compliance with all tank related regulations as applicable at the site (LFHC, FOC, FC, etc.)
Provide 24/7 environmental emergency response support to the site, and complete follow up corrective action as required
Engage with various departments to support long term environmental performance through business planning, layered audits, Zero Waste Treasure Hunts, and more
Plan and/or participate in environmental community outreach events that help support the site’s Wildlife Habitat Certification and engage local conservation groups
Develop project bid documents (SOW, Budget, etc.) to support the funding and execution of projects that eliminate environmental risk
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years experience in environmental engineering or related science or engineering field, experience in manufacturing preferred
Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, preferably in engineering or related environmental sciences
P. Eng preferred
Demonstrated understanding of provincial, federal and municipal environmental regulations and the ability to interpret how those regulations apply to site operations and activities
Demonstrated expertise in at least one environmental media (air permits and regulation, water permits and regulation, and/or waste regulations)
Expertise to investigate complex environmental problems and apply sound technical judgment to develop possible solutions
Highly developed oral and written communications skills
Experience with analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex data or situations so that others, including senior leadership, can comprehend, respond and contribute
High level of enthusiasm, persistence, leadership ability, initiative, and experienced judgment to identify priorities, initiate projects, and complete activities in a timely fashion
Experience working externally with regulators or other public or private sector individuals
Cross-functionally minded, with an ability to build and maintain strong relationships
Must have a valid full G Canadian driver’s license
Nice to have:
Demonstrated understanding of GM environmental requirements and how those requirements supplement environmental regulations and apply to site operations and activities
Working knowledge of GMS principles and ability to integrate environmental requirements into the GMS framework at the site
Knowledgeable in regulatory reports such as NPRI, GHG, AAR etc. is an asset
