We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to provide hands-on accounting support for Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This Long-term Contract position is fully onsite and will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting reporting cycles, and helping the organization stay aligned with governmental and higher education accounting expectations. The person in this role will contribute to close activities, audit readiness, and financial analysis while partnering with internal teams to ensure reliable and compliant accounting operations.
Job Responsibility:
Record and review general ledger activity, including the preparation of journal entries and supporting documentation for routine and adjusting transactions
Complete recurring reconciliations across bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and subsidiary records to confirm accuracy and resolve discrepancies promptly
Contribute to monthly and annual closing activities by preparing accruals, analyzing variances, and ensuring deadlines are met
Produce financial reports, schedules, and detailed account support used for management review and external reporting needs
Help maintain compliance with governmental accounting guidance, including applicable GASB standards and institutional policies
Support internal and external audit activity by assembling requested schedules, reconciling balances, and preparing documentation for single audit review
Assist with accounting oversight tied to grants, federal funding, and other regulated programs to promote accurate reporting and compliance
Partner with cross-functional departments to improve account coding, strengthen internal controls, and maintain complete financial records
Use accounting systems and Excel-based analysis to monitor financial activity, investigate unusual items, and recommend process improvements where appropriate
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
equivalent relevant experience may also be considered
At least 3 years of accounting experience with strong emphasis on reconciliations, general ledger work, and close support
Demonstrated ability to prepare journal entries, maintain account accuracy, and support month-end and year-end reporting
Familiarity with governmental accounting practices and working knowledge of GASB standards is preferred
Experience assisting with audits, including government, grant, or single audit environments, is highly valued
Strong Excel skills and comfort working within accounting or ERP systems
Ellucian Colleague experience is a plus
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with close attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities independently while communicating effectively with internal stakeholders
