We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to join our team in Palm Harbor, Florida for a Contract position. This role is best suited for a hands-on, detail-oriented accounting specialist who can manage complex payroll activities, maintain accurate financial records, and support reliable month-end reporting in an onsite environment. This candidate MUST bring strong governmental accounting knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to improve manual workflows while keeping daily financial operations running smoothly.
Job Responsibility:
Administer weekly payroll for approximately 80 employees in QuickBooks Desktop, ensuring accurate pay calculations for hourly and salaried staff, shift differentials, incentives, and periodic bonus payments
Maintain accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including processing vendor payments, recording customer receipts, and keeping transaction records current and accurate
Reconcile bank accounts, credit card activity, and other balance sheet accounts to support clean financial reporting and timely issue resolution
Prepare month-end financial information, including account balancing, budget updates, and standard reports for leadership and the Commissioner’s Office
Process incoming payments related to services such as plan reviews, post revenue in QuickBooks Desktop, and issue occasional invoices as needed
Review payroll and accounting procedures to identify inefficiencies, strengthen controls, and recommend practical automation opportunities
Support ongoing financial operations during potential system enhancement or implementation efforts, including assisting with process documentation and transition-related accounting tasks
Work onsite Monday through Friday and serve as a dependable resource for day-to-day accounting and payroll execution in a lean team environment
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
At least 5 years of combined accounting and payroll experience, including senior-level responsibility for month-end activities
Background in governmental accounting and payroll processing is strongly preferred
Proficiency with QuickBooks Desktop and experience handling reconciliations, payroll uploads, and general ledger activity
Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting
Demonstrated ability to improve processes and reduce reliance on manual workflows
Experience with government-related tax matters or public sector accounting environments is preferred
Prior exposure to accounting system implementations or automation projects is a plus
