The purpose of this Spiritual and Pastoral Care Volunteer role is to enrich the lives of residents by offering meaningful connection and helping them feel spiritually supported, valued and emotionally connected.

Job Responsibility:

  • Offer one-on-one companionship through conversation and presence to help residents feel emotionally connected and less isolated
  • Support residents to explore meaning, purpose and connection through faith, relationships, nature, creativity or reflection to enable residents to feel spiritually supported in ways that honour their personal beliefs
  • Listen respectfully to older people's stories, beliefs and life experiences to foster dignity, respect and cultural or spiritual affirmation
  • Facilitate or participate in gentle spiritual or reflective activities approved by the staff to promote well-being
  • Provide companionship without imposing personal beliefs or influencing older person's decisions

  • Provides and coordinates essential elements of spiritual/pastoral assessments and care to patients and families
  • Provides spiritual/pastoral care interventions
  • Documents assessments and interventions in the patient’s medical records
  • Provides ministry to and/or colleagueship with people of diverse cultures and those with disabilities
  • Collaborates with local clergy, and other spiritual leaders, to augment the patients’ faith group support system
  • Facilitates prayer and healing rites as appropriate to the area of service
  • Works closely and effectively with care managers, interdisciplinary care teams, social workers, nursing and medical staff to provide spiritual care insights
