The University of Kansas Health System Specimen Processing Coordinator is a position within the clinical laboratory that provides daily support to the staff working in the Specimen Processing Department with regard to laboratory policies, procedures, and operations. The Specimen Processing Coordinator strives to improve the patient continuity of care by closely monitoring daily staff and activities, resolving complex problems, documenting problems and providing information for improvement. The Specimen Processing Coordinator assists the supervisor by acting as a resource for providing guidance and assistance to the staff in the processing department. The Specimen Processing Coordinator will coordinate staff resources and solve immediate staff problems, consulting supervisor or lab leadership when appropriate. The Specimen Processing Coordinator will serve as a role model.
Job Responsibility:
Training and orientation of new hires in the Specimen Processing Department
Facilitating the 6 month and annual competency of staff
Oversee daily activities and work assignments of Specimen Processing staff
Manage sick and tardy calls from staff and implementing schedule changes
Collaborate with Phlebotomy Coordinators
Coordinate workflow to ensure timely processing and delivery of specimens
Effectively manage orders when specimen type does not match test order
Troubleshoot missing specimens and/or orders from off campus labs
Act as resource for new patient set up for MY CHART
Perform all steps required for referral test processing: aliquot, freeze, and ensure proper pour off tubes for shipment
Enter results in Epic/O2 from non- interfaced referral labs
Test monitoring functions
Troubleshooting difficult phone calls and delivering service recovery
LIS/HIS responsibilities to support the Specimen Processing Department
Scan documents in Image Now / Media Manager when needed
Participate in TJC, CAP, CMS, and State inspection and/or survey readiness activities
Review selected policies and procedures
Participate in all relevant quality assurance and quality improvement (QA/QI) activities
Assist with supply inventory and ordering
Attend and participate in department and other relevant meetings
May serve on Laboratory Risk and Safety Committee as adjunct member
Participate in continuing education
Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
Requirements:
High School Graduate
2 or more years experience in Clinical Laboratory specimen processing and hospital/laboratory information systems data entry
Nice to have:
Bachelor of Science Life Sciences, chemistry or math
Associates Degree Life Sciences, chemistry or math
2 or more years experience at KUH in specimen processing and/or phlebotomy
Previous supervisory or lead tech experience
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP)
