Reporting to the Director, Tailings & Dams for the Africa Asia-Pacific (AAP) region, in the position of Specialist, Tailings & Dams you will provide enterprise-level governance for operating tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and water storage facilities (WSFs), and serve as a technical subject matter expert in both the management of existing facilities and the design of new ones. This position supports the safe, responsible and sustainable management of TSFs and WSFs across Newmont’s AAP region which includes the Cadia, Boddington, Tanami, Lihir, Ahafo South and Ahafo North mine sites.
Job Responsibility:
Provide enterprise-level governance for operating tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and water storage facilities (WSFs)
Serve as a technical subject matter expert in both the management of existing facilities and the design of new ones
Support the safe, responsible and sustainable management of TSFs and WSFs across Newmont’s AAP region
Strengthen Newmont’s risk management processes for TSFs and WSFs
Work closely with site teams to identify potential risks, develop and prioritize mitigation actions and track progress
Support several exciting new TSF projects currently in varying stages of design across the AAP region
Support the development of, and updates to, standards and guidelines related to TSFs and WSFs
Implement tools and processes to improve performance and management of TSFs and WSFs
Implement and oversee systematic third-party reviews
Support risk assessments and provide input into the implementation of risk mitigation action plans
Act as Newmont liaison with engineering firms (i.e. Engineer of Record) and provide technical guidance across operations and major projects
Be subject matter expert for input into project-related geotechnical, hydrological and hydrogeological data collection, analysis, design, construction, operational management and closure and documentation peer review for stage-gate process
Provide support to the Director, Tailings & Dams for strategic life-of-mine and life-of-asset tailings management planning
Mentor, train and develop team in relation to tailings management and dam safety
Undertake research on current industry trends and best practice and provide input into implementation of Newmont’s Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
Requirements:
University degree qualification in Engineering (Civil/Geotechnical/Geological) with an accredited course in Soil Mechanics
Post-graduate degree qualification in a related discipline preferred
Chartered Professional Engineer accredited by Engineers Australia and current membership
Demonstrated experience in a similar position within a consulting firm or global mining operation
Knowledge of mine operations principles and practices in civil, geological, geotechnical and hydrological engineering
Expertise in soil mechanics, embankment design and construction, mine material investigation and characterisation, water management and water balance and tailings technologies and management practices
Competency in tailings and water storage facility design, including operations, surveillance and risk management
Proven ability to work constructively in a team environment and engage respectfully with diverse stakeholders
Advanced technical writing skills with experience in presentation delivery across diverse audiences
Skills in Microsoft Office applications and geotechnical/hydrotechnical-related software – i.e. stability, seepage, settlement, deformation, water balance, geological modelling, geotechnical data management modelling etc.
