The Governance Specialist, Data & AI is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing Air Canada’s Data & AI Governance Programs. This role ensures that all Data & AI initiatives comply with ethical, regulatory, and organizational standards, working collaboratively with IT, Data, Legal, Compliance, Privacy, and Business teams. The Specialist will drive the adoption of responsible AI and data governance practices, fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and trust in how data is managed, and AI is used across the organization.
Job Responsibility:
Establish, update and enforce company-wide (incl. affiliates) policies, directives and procedures to maintain trusted AI systems, as well as data integrity, protection, effective usage and alignment with regulatory requirements
Collaborate with privacy, legal, compliance, business, and technical teams to ensure AI solutions and data practices adhere to governance standards, including privacy principles, ethical requirements, data integrity, and regulatory compliance
Develop and conduct training programs to promote a culture of responsible AI and strong data governance and ensure understanding and adherence to Data & AI governance principles
Implement monitoring systems to track compliance and effectiveness of Data & AI governance policies and procedures and generate regular reports for senior leadership
Monitor industry trends and best practices in Data & AI governance to keep Air Canada ahead
Ensure knowledge transfer to peers by coaching and mentoring to build the Data & AI governance capability in the organization
Oversee cross-functional data stewardship activities to ensure accurate and consistent data across all systems and processes
Drive coordinated efforts to ensure comprehensive documentation of AI models and solutions utilized across the organization, leveraging our Governance platform for consistency and transparency
Lead assessments and impact analyses for AI initiatives, including bias detection, explainability, and accountability
Develop a strategy to govern and monitor new AI trends, including AI Agents
Own the process of addressing audit findings and developing remediation plans
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Data Governance, Law, business or related field
5+ years of experience in technology governance, compliance, AI Strategy or risk management
Strong understanding of AI technologies and ethical considerations
Knowledge of AI governance, ethics, and regulatory frameworks
Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud or Snowflake) and data warehousing
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills
Experience in policy development and implementation
Analytical mindset and attention to detail
Demonstrates a pragmatic approach with a strong focus on achieving tangible results
Ability to navigate through ambiguity and changing priorities
Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment
Nice to have:
Master’s degree an asset
experience in AI or data governance preferred
Certifications in Data Governance Frameworks, such as DAMA and/or DCAM would be a plus
Experience with Collibra or other governance platforms considered an asset
