Job Description:

First Class Support provides academic support to students in receipt of disabled student allowance (DSA). We are looking to galvanise our team of highly qualified and experienced specialist support staff. Your support should aim to develop students’ skills for autonomy in the learning environment. It is likely that students receiving your support will be dyslexic and/or have other specific learning difficulties including autism.

Job Responsibility:

Address issues which some students might have in acquiring, recalling and retaining information in written and spoken language
Address the range of memory, organisational, attention and numeracy difficulties that students with specific learning difficulties often face when working in an HE context
Develop students’ skills for autonomy in the learning environment
Deliver support where clear goals and timescales are of paramount importance
Provide support tailored to a student’s individual needs
Provide ongoing support throughout a student's course

Requirements:

Educated to degree level (2:1 or above only)
Hold a teaching qualification
For those working with students with Specific Learning Difficulties, a recognised specialist Students with SpLD qualification is required
Evidence of holding a full or associate professional membership at an SpLD body (PATOSS, BDA, ADSHE/PASSHE or Dyslexia Guild)
Substantial experience of working with students with disabilities and/or specific learning difficulties on a one to one basis
In depth understanding of the effects of specific learning difficulties on language and learning in an HE context
In depth knowledge of how other disabilities affect particular areas of learning
Awareness of the strengths which students with specific learning difficulties can bring to a learning situation
Skills to help students to make use of these strengths and overcome barriers to learning
Must be able to receive emails and phone calls when on location
Currently self-employed, or in the process of registering as a self-employed professional
