Job Description

To support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within an Alternative Provision setting, helping them to engage with learning, regulate their emotions, and develop positive behaviour, confidence, and independence.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEND, including SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and learning difficulties
  • Support pupils to access the curriculum in a way that meets their individual needs
  • Promote emotional regulation, resilience, and positive behaviour
  • Implement behaviour support plans and de-escalation strategies where required
  • Encourage social skills, communication, and self-esteem
  • Assist the teacher in planning and delivering engaging, differentiated activities
  • Adapt learning materials to suit pupils’ abilities and learning styles
  • Support pupils during practical, outdoor, and vocational activities
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or disengagement from education
  • Support pupils during transitions and unstructured times
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies at all times
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and external professionals

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEN, particularly in alternative or specialist settings
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour positively and safely
  • Commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and pupil wellbeing
  • Driving License required to apply

Nice to have

  • Training or experience in SEMH, ASD, trauma-informed practice, or behaviour management
  • Relevant qualification (e.g. Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, CACHE, or equivalent)
  • Experience working in Alternative Provision or similar settings
