Job Description

This newly created role is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of Council's Water and Waste team. The Solid Waste Manager will lead the delivery of solid waste, recycling, and resource recovery services across the district, with a key operational focus on the Rakiura Recycling Centre. You will provide operational leadership, staff management, and strategic oversight to ensure services are safe, efficient, compliant, and customer focused. Working closely with contractors, stakeholders, and the wider community, you will also contribute to long-term planning, continuous improvement, waste minimisation, and responsible environmental management across Southland District Council's solid waste activities.

Job Responsibility

  • lead the delivery of solid waste, recycling, and resource recovery services across the district

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related field required
  • 25+ years of experience in solid waste engineering, with demonstrated expertise in leading and delivering complex projects. Experience includes landfill permitting, design, construction documentation, construction quality assurance, landfill gas collection and control systems, closure and expansion projects, stormwater management, leachate and condensate systems, transfer stations, and post-closure renewable energy developments. Further, a successful candidate will need a strong record of managing multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating with regulators and clients, and preparing permit-ready and construction-level documents for public and private solid waste facilities
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License: must have current, active licensure in a minimum of two of the following states with the ability to obtain the remaining licenses within 6 months: Arizona, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming. Also, must have no disciplinary action taken on any professional license for technical or ethical issues
  • A deep understanding of project management, client relations, and strategic business development

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to pass the drug tests
  • Travel: up to 20%
