Job Description:

Join CSIRO's Engineering and Technology program as a Software Engineer and play a pivotal role in advancing Australia's marine science. You'll support diverse research projects impacting the Marine National Facility and contribute to developing cutting-edge, in-house equipment used to explore and understand our marine environment. Your work will span from designing robust instrument control systems to developing data acquisition and analysis software, enabling world-class marine research.

Job Responsibility:

  • Collaborate with team members to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications in line with project requirements
  • Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving software defects and technical issues
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes
  • Document code, technical specifications, and user manuals as needed
  • Communicate progress and challenges effectively within the team and with stakeholders
  • Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO's Values, Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy and diversity initiatives

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred)
  • Familiarity with software development methodologies (Agile/Scrum preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities

Nice to have:

  • Experience with modern development tools and environments (e.g., Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines)
  • Experience developing or testing web applications, including responsive design and cross-browser compatibility
  • Ability to develop and execute test plans, write test cases, and document results in defect reports
  • Proven contribution to a public, open-source projects (own or others)
