Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Site Environmental & Sustainability Manager to provide senior environmental and sustainability leadership across the Sizewell C construction site and associated developments. Reporting to the Head of Site Compliance, you will be accountable for ensuring full compliance with environmental permits, licences and regulatory commitments, while driving high standards of environmental behaviour and sustainability performance across site teams and the supply chain. This is a highly visible, site-based leadership role operating across pre-construction, construction delivery and commissioning phases on a large, complex and highly regulated project.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide clear, authoritative environmental and sustainability leadership to site teams and Tier 1 contractors, setting standards and expectations for performance
  • Establish, maintain and oversee robust arrangements to ensure compliance with environmental permits, licences, consents and project commitments
  • Lead and coordinate environmental and sustainability activities across the site to ensure compliance with agreed standards, regulatory requirements and best practice
  • Drive a strong environmental and sustainability culture, promoting world-class behaviours across the delivery teams and supply chain
  • Ensure significant environmental aspects and risks are identified, managed and mitigated appropriately throughout construction and commissioning
  • Work closely with project and operations teams to drive continuous improvement in environmental and sustainability performance
  • Lead engagement with environmental regulators, in particular the Environment Agency, working collaboratively with the Client Environment Team
  • Maintain compliance with the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, ensuring effective implementation against policy, objectives and targets
  • Maintain oversight of site environmental inspections, audits and surveillance programmes
  • Develop and implement environmental and sustainability performance measures (KPIs), including reporting and review processes
  • Lead environmental incident and event investigations, ensuring learning and improvement actions are implemented
  • Manage departmental resources, processes and budgets, ensuring activities are optimised to meet project objectives
  • Lead, develop and performance-manage environmental and sustainability staff, ensuring capability aligns with project needs
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including client teams, internal regulators, Tier 1 contractors and statutory bodies
  • Provide leadership on sustainability delivery across the site, including: Carbon reduction, including implementation of PAS 2080–aligned initiatives
  • Sustainable water consumption and resource efficiency
  • Circular economy principles, including waste reduction and material reuse
  • Supply chain biodiversity and nature enhancement measures
  • BREEAM Infrastructure, supporting achievement of a Whole Project Award – ‘Very Good’

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in an environmental or related discipline
  • Extensive experience providing senior environmental and sustainability leadership on major construction or infrastructure projects
  • Broad construction field experience, ideally across multiple phases of the project lifecycle, including site preparation, civils, mechanical and electrical installation, with exposure to commissioning activities
  • Strong understanding of the practical challenges of delivering environmental compliance and sustainability through complex engineering works
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental permits, licences, consents and regulatory compliance within highly regulated environments
  • Proven ability to lead, influence and challenge senior stakeholders, delivery teams and Tier 1 contractors
  • Experience implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including direct engagement with environmental regulators
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including direct line management and/or functional leadership of site and supply-chain teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with credibility to operate in a high-profile, multi-stakeholder environment

Nice to have

  • Experience in a highly regulated industry (e.g. nuclear, energy, major infrastructure)
  • Experience driving environmental and sustainability performance on large-scale projects
  • Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IEMA, CIEEM)
