Job Responsibility

  • Handle, prepare and set up raw materials supplied to each workstream
  • Carry out heavy duty lock stitch sewing in line with Manufacturing Instructions and required quality standards
  • Complete overlocking activities accurately and consistently
  • Apply binding to textile components in line with approved methods and specifications
  • Work from supplied samples, patterns and instructions to produce components to the required standard
  • Inspect completed work and finished products, identifying and reporting any defects or quality concerns
  • Record production, quality and traceability information accurately and on time
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area, following all health and safety and production procedures
  • Work closely with Textile Cutters and the Team Leader to ensure prepared materials and sewn components are completed in line with production priorities

Requirements

  • Previous experience using sewing machines within a textile, clothing, upholstery or manufacturing environment
  • Experience completing practical sewing activities accurately and consistently, ideally including lock stitch, overlocking or binding
  • Able to work from supplied samples, patterns and written Manufacturing Instructions
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to inspect completed work and identify quality concerns
  • Able to complete precise manual sewing activities safely and consistently, with reasonable adjustments where appropriate
  • Able to understand written and verbal instructions in English, as the role involves safety requirements, Manufacturing Instructions and accurate record keeping
  • Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a busy production team
  • Able to record production and traceability information accurately

Nice to have

  • Experience using heavy duty or industrial sewing machines
  • Experience sewing technical fabrics, protective materials or products requiring high standards of quality and traceability
  • Experience working to production targets within a manufacturing environment

  • Accurate cutting of samples by hand in a range of fabrics including lace, embroidery, stretch jersey etc following cutting and placement instructions given
  • Proactive in ensuring samples are made accurately 1st time by checking and highlighting to pattern techs any issues with patterns, technical paperwork and measurement charts
  • Work in partnership with the pattern techs on product development at all stages giving feedback and making suggestions for pattern requirements, finish techniques and garment construction methods suitable for the chosen fabrics and trims in bulk production
  • Accurately measuring samples that you produce to ensure they meet the required measurement spec and feeding back to tech any problems with achieving the measurements
  • Checking all samples you produce to ensure that quality meets expected standards, and sample is fit for intended end purpose e.g. technical fitting, wear trials, buying presentation samples
  • Ensure that all feedback and suggestions are recorded on the correct paperwork to retain a full style history
  • With the other sample machinists manage the fabric and trim stocks in the sample room to ensure samples are not delayed due to shortages
  • Work closely with the other sample machinists and pattern techs to manage the weekly workload in line with the agreed processes and ensuring the efficient running of the sample room
  • With the other sample machinists engage with the Technical Manager and Lead Techs to ensure that sample quality standards are deliverable, giving feedback and input into the sample room working processes and machinery inventory
