The sergeant is a first-line supervisor responsible for all patrol operations during their tour of duty. This includes, but is not limited to, the oversight of campus police officers, communication control officers, public safety officers, security officers, building guards, contract security, and night student operations. The sergeant is responsible for responding to significant incidents on the main campus, in the Jewelry District, and providing guidance to line personnel. As a member of the supervisory staff, the incumbent is also responsible for the field training of officers, investigations, officer safety, community policing, and special assignments related to patrol operations.
Job Responsibility:
Supervise police officers and other department employees in enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and in provision of personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus
Identify problems related to line operations and work with the members of the Department and the University community to solve these problems
Respond to the scene of significant incidents to coordinate an effective department response
Coordinate follow-up notifications and investigations assigning cases to the Investigations Unit, as necessary
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, management, administration, or a related field from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent combination of education and experience
Five (5) years law enforcement experience or three years experience as a Brown University Campus Police Officer
Graduate of the RI Municipal Police Academy or other recognized police training academy
Licensed, or eligible for licensing, by the RI State Police
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated interpersonal skills, ability to motivate and team build, and ability to take command of any situation
Must demonstrate leadership ability and tact in dealing with employees and University situations
Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in the care and use of firearms, self-defense tools, and criminal detection devices
Nice to have:
knowledge of community policing and working with an ethnically diverse community and union population desirable
