Job Description:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for someone to join our Executive & Professional lines team in our Melbourne office. The role focuses on building the business with our national brokers writing risks across multiple Financial lines products including Management Liability, Professional Indemnity and D&O. We are looking for a dynamic individual who is intelligent, passionate, and committed to excellence. You should excel at building relationships and feel comfortable collaborating across all areas of our business, including legal, actuarial, claims, and underwriting teams within the broader BHSI network. A positive attitude, strong professionalism, and exceptional communication skills are essential. This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Underwriter eager to broaden their expertise and take on greater responsibilities within a highly respected team at a leading global insurance company.

Job Responsibility:

  • Manage and build upon a book of business that is consistent with the team’s strategic focus and risk appetite across multiple Financial lines products
  • Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships to maximise new and renewal business opportunities across the national broker distribution channel
  • Underwrite assigned accounts while ensuring appropriate risk analysis of previous claims history, financial reports, and additional information to determine exposure and underwriting terms
  • Review submissions from brokers, providing quotes in a timely manner and within their delegated authority
  • Negotiate and define the specific terms of insurance policies, pricing, and coverage enhancements with brokers
  • Work collaboratively with Actuary, and other underwriters to derive appropriate premium and monitor the ongoing policy performance
  • Collaborate with our Claims team to help create a positive and transparent experience for our customers
  • Keep abreast of market conditions and trends, providing feedback to Product and Portfolio leaders as necessary

Requirements:

  • Ideally at least 5 years’ experience in Financial Lines, preferably in an underwriting role
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex financial data and make sound decisions
  • Existing broker and customer relationships, or experience and the ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly
  • Underwriting acumen in all Liability lines
  • Experience and understanding of relevant Policy forms
  • Experience marketing to specialised brokers
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels and disciplines
  • Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experience
  • Degree or equivalent education, and/or strong insurance qualifications are highly desirable
What we offer:
  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates and our other stakeholders
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework
