The Senior Systems Engineer ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the city’s IT systems. This position involves designing, implementing, and maintaining systems to support business objectives while ensuring optimal performance and security. The Senior Systems Engineer works collaboratively with IT teams and stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, support system enhancements, and implement new technologies to drive operational efficiency. Additionally, this role includes the design and management of the systems architecture, including the physical appliances that support the virtual environment.
Job Responsibility:
Collaborates with network staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes
Works with executive team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues
Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members, fostering skill development and promoting best practices in systems engineering and operational management
Designs and deploys new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems
Performs cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems to aid management in making implementation decisions
Conducts research on software and systems products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts
Interacts and negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure system-related products and services
Gauges the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems
develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems
Proposes and creates system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to system programmer and development teams
Designs and performs server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the city’s disaster recovery and business continuity strategies
Integrates servers, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems
Ensures system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and other applications
Creates and maintains documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records
Ensures compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems
Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems
Monitors and tests system performance
prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports
Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Minimum of six years of experience in a related field
Valid Driver’s License
Ability to meet the criminal background regulations mandated by the FBI CJIS Security Policy
Must possess two certifications from the following organizations (or similar): Microsoft
Cisco
VMware
Comp TIA
Commvault
ISC2
GIAC
etc.
Work requires the ability to read technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, detailed diagrams, installation and configuration guides
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and evaluate statistical information
Work requires the ability to write memos, instruction documents, maintenance and troubleshooting documents, spreadsheets, and forms
Nice to have:
Advanced experience with administration and support of critical systems, including the management of virtual infrastructure, Microsoft Entra, Office 365, endpoint management systems, DNS services, as well as backup solutions
