Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) are looking for a seasoned architect to join Phantom Works Australia (PW‑A) to outline the design, development and delivery of AI‑enabled, systems‑oriented solutions for defence. You will define the technical vision, create architecture artefacts, and guide multidisciplinary teams as they build cloud‑native, data‑integrated platforms that leverage large language models, machine‑learning pipelines, autonomous agents and workflow automation. PW‑A specialises in identifying, analysing and prototyping strategic capabilities that can be transitioned to a BDA business unit within a five‑year timeframe. This role would shape the development and implementation of world leading strategic capabilities in a fast-paced rapid prototyping environment and observe its direct transition into real operational systems.
Job Responsibility:
Architectural Guidance - Create and maintain architecture artefacts (requirements, algorithms, interfaces, design docs) for complex AI-enabled systems
AI & Automation - Apply LLM, ML, agent development, and workflow-automation techniques to new and existing defence solutions
Service-Oriented Design - Lead Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) design, definition, and development, ensuring reusable, loosely-coupled services across platforms
Cloud & IaC - Design cloud-based architectures, data-integration flows and implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) (e.g., Terraform) for scalable deployments
Monitoring & Logging - Define and implement monitoring, logging and key-performance-metric frameworks to guarantee reliability and observability
Development Excellence - Steward high-quality, maintainable code (Python required
C++ desirable) and, where needed, front-end components using React/TypeScript.(desirable)
Testing & Reliability - Foster intentional testing methodologies, debugging and performance optimisation throughout the software lifecycle
Mentoring & Collaboration - Guide senior engineers, foster best-practice engineering culture and act as primary liaison with customers, internal stakeholders and international Boeing partners
Continuous Innovation - Stay current with emerging AI, cloud and automation technologies and evaluate their suitability for strategic outcomes
Requirements:
14+ years of relevant work experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience, e.g., PhD + 9 years, Master + 12 years)
Proven senior-level experience architecting complex systems-oriented solutions in high-security or defence environments
Strong Python development background and domain expertise in LLMs, machine learning, agent development and workflow automation
Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet Defence security requirements
