Job Responsibility

  • Lead the end-to-end design and evolution of our next-generation energy technology platform
  • Define and own the system architecture across edge devices and cloud, ensuring it is secure, scalable, standards-compliant, and future-proof
  • Translate complex energy system requirements into robust, production-ready solutions
  • Design architectures that reliably support tens of thousands of distributed industrial devices
  • Integrate real-time system within built environment and industrial set up with advanced connectivity (MQTT, OPC-UA / IEC 62541) and cloud-native data platforms
  • Develop Edge-AI control models and translate them into production systems across both edge and cloud environments
  • Set architectural direction while actively guiding firmware, hardware, and cloud implementation across teams
  • Prioritise secure, standards-compliant, and future-proof systems that can scale, adapt, and operate globally over time

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in systems architecture, on-site controllers, or IIoT platforms
  • In-depth experience in designing, testing, or installing control interfaces for at least one of these commercial or industrial asset categories: Battery BESS inverters, HVAC systems, heat pumps, and thermal storage utilising IIOT controllers, PLCs, RTUs, or Building Management Systems (BMS/BEMS)
  • Strong domain background in energy systems, industrial automation, HVAC automation or similar industries
  • Deep knowledge in any of the industrial communication protocols (Modbus, BACnet, OPCC, MQTT, OPC-UA,)
  • Strong understanding of networking and secure communications
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 (industrial automation programming)
  • Proficiency in at least one of the programming languages: C, C++, Go, or Python
  • Strong experience with embedded Linux, real-time systems, and controller design
  • Experience designing cloud-native architectures (Azure)
  • Deep expertise in time-series data systems (e.g. Postgres, InfluxDB)
  • Experience building data ingestion pipelines and streaming architectures
  • Solid understanding of microservices, containers, and distributed system design
  • Clear communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, startup environments
  • Able to travel to customer or manufacturer locations within the UK, EU, or internationally at short notice
  • Demonstrated interest in energy transition, sustainability, or emerging technologies
  • UK-based – we are not sponsoring visas at this time and will be looking to collaborate in-person at least once per month

Nice to have

  • Experience building and validating models using MATLAB/Simulink or Python scientific stacks and have the ability to translate models into production-grade code
  • Experience in energy optimisation, DERs (Distributed Energy Resources), or grid systems
  • Familiar with MD – Capacity charges, Export limitation and G99 requirements
  • Familiar with NIS Directive and Secure by Design principles
  • Knowledge of AI/ML applications / Edge-AI in energy systems
  • Prior experience scaling global IIoT deployments

  • Own end-to-end solution design for the manufacturing platform, covering edge-to-cloud data flows, processing, persistence, and consumption (e.g., operational dashboards, reporting, analytics, and enterprise integrations)
  • Partner with product and business stakeholders to capture requirements, define solution options, and make trade-offs across functionality, cost, security, reliability, and time-to-value
  • Create and maintain solution architecture artefacts (diagrams, decision records, interface contracts, data models, NFRs) and ensure documentation is kept current in the agreed repository (e.g., Azure DevOps Wiki or similar)
  • Define and govern non-functional requirements: security, performance, availability, resilience, observability, data retention, and compliance—ensuring they are measurable and testable
  • Lead the architectural approach for manufacturing data contextualization, including production order context, downtime/event validation, and consistent reporting semantics across shifts/lines/plants
  • Drive integration design with enterprise and plant systems (e.g., ERP, quality systems, maintenance workflows), selecting appropriate patterns (API-led, event-driven, batch) without locking into a single technology by default
  • Provide architectural guidance to engineering teams through the delivery lifecycle: refinement, design reviews, implementation guidance, test strategy, release planning, and operational readiness
  • Establish and evolve platform standards: reference architectures, reusable patterns, data contracts, naming/structuring conventions, and guardrails for teams and vendors
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity and enterprise architecture to ensure solutions align with corporate principles, and that identity, access control, encryption, and auditability are embedded by design
