Apex Systems is seeking a HYBRID Storage & Virtualization Engineer based in North Carolina to support our client, including occasional onsite engagements. While this role is primarily remote, candidates must live in North Carolina for periodic in‑person meetings as needed. This assignment is anticipated to be a 6‑month contract with strong potential for extension; however, Apex Systems cannot guarantee the length of this assignment. This will also have a first‑shift Monday–Friday schedule.
Job Responsibility:
Support and maintain enterprise storage environments, including cabling, switching, and connectivity across Fiber Channel, FCoE, iSCSI, and NAS protocols (e.g., CIFS, NFS)
Monitor and optimize capacity, performance, and utilization across SAN, NAS, and object‑based (S3) storage systems
Perform upgrades, patches, and firmware updates for storage platforms and related hardware
Provision and manage file, block, and object storage, as well as VMware datastores, based on business and project requirements
Coordinate with vendors for maintenance, troubleshooting, and hardware replacement
Configure and enforce access controls, authentication policies, and storage security standards
Apply continuous‑improvement practices (e.g., Lean Six Sigma) to streamline processes and reduce operational friction
Diagnose and resolve storage performance issues and system outages
Mentor junior team members and support their technical development
Collaborate across infrastructure teams on design, planning, and maintenance of interconnected systems
Identify recurring issues, develop remediation plans, and drive long‑term stability
Manage support contracts and vendor relationships
Stay current on emerging technologies, tools, and best practices within storage and virtualization domains
Communicate key updates, risks, and progress to leadership
Perform related duties as needed to support core infrastructure operations
Requirements:
8+ years of hands‑on experience in enterprise SAN/storage engineering and systems administration
Deep understanding of storage architecture, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and capacity planning
Proficiency with Windows Server platforms and hardware
Strong working knowledge of Unix/Linux systems
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑moving environment
Strong teamwork, organization, and time‑management skills
High attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive or confidential information
Commitment to maintaining a secure and well‑organized workspace
Bachelor’s degree in a computer‑related field or equivalent professional experience
Relevant technical certifications may be required depending on project scope
Ability to obtain security clearance and pass required background checks
Flexibility to work varied hours depending on project or operational needs
