Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of a university environment in Richmond, Virginia. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate records, supporting monthly and annual close activities, and helping ensure reliable financial reporting across multiple accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong general ledger experience, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively with detailed financial data in a collaborative setting.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead or support the daily coordination of accounting activities, including guiding workflow priorities for accounting staff when needed
  • Prepare financial statements, internal reports, and supporting schedules to promote accurate and timely reporting
  • Record and review journal entries in the general ledger and help maintain the integrity of accounting records
  • Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and profit and loss accounts, investigating and escalating discrepancies as appropriate
  • Manage payroll-related accounting tasks and produce payroll reports to support internal review and compliance needs
  • Support monthly and year-end close processes, including posting recurring entries and confirming sub-ledger alignment with the general ledger
  • Assist with annual audit preparation by organizing documentation, providing schedules, and responding to information requests
  • Maintain orderly accounting files, assign account codes when necessary, and help ensure transactions are classified correctly under departmental guidelines
  • Review accounting documents and reports for completeness and accuracy, including selected revenue activity such as ticket sales and related proceeds
  • Prepare required tax reporting documents, including 1099 forms, and assist with accounts receivable postings tied to student account activity

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely related field
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably including general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Strong knowledge of bookkeeping principles and standard accounting procedures, with the ability to explain processes to others
  • Demonstrated accuracy, organization, and attention to detail when handling financial records and reports
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • experience with Jenzabar is preferred
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with a service-oriented and attentive approach to working with others
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions, manage multiple priorities, and learn new systems quickly
  • Must be able to meet bondability requirements and lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
