This Senior Protection Engineer role is ideal for a seasoned professional with strong practical know-how and a passion for keeping power systems safe, compliant, and reliable. You’ll lead protection design work, support critical infrastructure projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with field and design teams to bring protection systems to life.
Job Responsibility:
Lead the design and review of secondary systems (protection and control) for HV and MV networks
Conduct fault and protection coordination studies
Develop protection settings and support testing and commissioning
Ensure compliance with NZ standards and regulatory requirements
Work closely with clients, contractors, and internal teams to deliver quality solutions
Mentor and guide junior engineers - sharing your practical and technical knowledge
Stay current with evolving standards, safety codes, and protection technologies
Requirements:
Electrical engineering degree or NZ-recognised equivalent
Extensive field experience - construction, commissioning, or switchgear settings
Familiarity with protection analysis software (ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD)
Sound knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards and NZ grid compliance
Strong communication skills - comfortable leading, guiding, and solving complex problems
