We're hiring a Senior Product Marketing Lead for Retail Hardware to drive the strategy and execution of Shopify’s Point of Sale (POS) hardware portfolio. The ideal candidate has proven experience in hardware product marketing within retail and a knack for translating complex technical concepts into clear, impactful narratives that drive adoption and retention. This person will be a creative, collaborative and strategic leader who synthesizes merchant feedback, competitive intelligence, and market trends to develop high-impact positioning and go-to-market strategies for our hardware products and retail solutions. Please note: this is a senior lead-level Individual Contributor (IC) role and will not include people management responsibilities.
Job Responsibility:
Develop deep merchant, product and competitive context: Continuously analyze merchant feedback from support tickets, sales conversations, community forums, and direct merchant research to identify pain points
Maintain a deep understanding of the retail hardware competitive landscape and track competitor product announcements
Use this information to identify strategy and positioning opportunities for hardware products
Develop differentiated narratives: Develop product narratives and positioning that differentiate Shopify's retail hardware portfolio from competitors
Lead hardware GTM strategy: Own end-to-end go-to-market planning for hardware launches, including SKU strategy, pricing positioning, channel coordination, and cross-functional execution with Product, Supply Chain, Operations, Creative, Sales, and Support teams
Create merchant-centric content: Develop compelling storytelling for retail merchant audiences, including case studies, product guides, sales enablement materials, and merchant success content that drives adoption and retention
Enable commercial teams: Partner with Sales, Partner Success, and Support teams to create enablement materials, objection handling frameworks, and competitive battle cards specific to hardware and retail solutions
Measure and optimize: Define and track key metrics for hardware adoption, merchant retention, and competitive win rates, using data to continuously refine positioning and GTM strategy
Requirements:
8+ years of product marketing experience
At least 3+ years focused on hardware products, ideally in retail technology, point-of-sale systems, or commerce platforms
Proficiency in synthesizing complex product strategies into compelling, well-written narratives and actionable messaging for multiple audiences
Proven success leading complex product launches from strategy through execution, with measurable business impact
Experience working with in-house creative teams
Track record of developing positioning and programs that drive merchant retention, feature adoption, and long-term merchant value
Ability to influence and collaborate with Product, Engineering, Sales, Support, Supply Chain, and Operations teams without direct authority
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present to and influence senior stakeholders
Ability to thrive on change and make great decisions quickly with incomplete information
Nice to have:
Previous experience at retail technology companies (Square, Lightspeed, etc.)
Direct experience in physical retail operations or management
Familiarity with Shopify's platform and retail ecosystem
Experience marketing to small and medium-sized retail businesses
