Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join the W76-1 Joint Test Assembly (JTA) Weapon System Team. In this role, you will contribute to the mechanical design, development, and qualification of the new instrumented JTA flight test body for the W76-1 weapon systems.

Job Responsibility:

  • Develop detailed understanding of customer requirements
  • Assemble and integrate mechanical system assemblies
  • Integrate and test subassemblies and system configurations
  • Plan and execute environmental, performance, and safety qualification tests
  • Analyze system-level test data and support anomaly resolution
  • Manage product definition and release documentation

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five years of directly relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Active DOE Q Clearance or equivalent
  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or highly related field
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Self-motivated and comfortable in fast-paced environment
  • Experience applying engineering principles to trade studies
  • Experience with JTA development programs and nuclear weapons lifecycle
  • Proficient in test instrumentation and planning
  • Familiarity with Sandia Mechanical test facilities
  • Knowledge of Sandia drawing and authorization systems
  • Skilled in CREO
  • Experience working with NNSA, DOD, LANL, KCNSC, Pantex

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Contribute to a new JTA PRT focused on creating an instrumented JTA system to sustain long-term (end-of-life) system flight test capabilities
  • Assist the JTA 6 PRT lead in developing instrumented Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs) for system flight testing
  • Collaborate with system engineers and stakeholders to maintain a comprehensive understanding of integrated system requirements and ensure mechanical engineering efforts align with project goals
  • Develop and implement strategies to sustain safety, reliability, and operational effectiveness of mechanical systems throughout their lifecycle
  • Analyze system performance and validate mechanical environments through ground and flight testing, component-level testing, and simulation tools, ensuring mechanical systems meet performance specifications at all assembly levels
  • Manage work package agreements, project schedules, and budgets to ensure timely and efficient execution of assigned activities
  • Support anomaly and stockpile finding investigations by conducting root cause analysis and developing potential solutions
  • Prepare technical documentation including white papers, presentations, and contributions to the Annual Assessment Report to effectively communicate findings and recommendations

  • Develop expertise in the design and functionality of safety-critical components and systems, including mechanisms such as strong links, LACs, and firing subsystems, to fully evaluate component performance across normal and abnormal environments
  • Utilize your expertise to identify safety-critical features and ensure that designs meet assured safety standards
  • Write nuclear safety specifications and prepare documentation for requirements outlined in various Realized Product Procedures (RPPs), which are essential for the weapon realization life cycle
  • Partner with subject matter experts to create the technical basis from analyses and test data that demonstrates safety-critical components are safe for their intended environments
  • Work closely with the nuclear safety system lead, design and production teams, and other key partners across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (e.g., Kansas City NSC, Pantex) to develop solutions for a wide range of technical challenges
  • Help develop nuclear safety fault trees for components and systems, applying research to the design, development, analysis, and testing of mechanical, electromechanical, and piezoelectric systems
