Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a motivated and experienced Research & Development Engineer to join Org 1313, EM Systems Engineering & Qualification, at our Albuquerque, NM site. This mid-career position offers the opportunity to contribute to advanced engineering projects focused on identifying, analyzing, and mitigating unintended electromagnetic emissions to secure sensitive data and systems supporting national security missions. The successful candidate will apply expertise in electromagnetic emissions security, circuit design and testing, and mitigation techniques to ensure compliance with stringent government standards.
Job Responsibility
Lead and execute R&D projects related to electromagnetic emissions assessments, testing, and mitigation
Perform RF analysis, EMI/EMC testing, and implement shielding, filtering, and grounding countermeasures
Utilize RF test instrumentation such as spectrum analyzers, test receivers, and oscilloscopes to conduct emissions security assessments
Prepare detailed technical reports documenting test results, findings, and recommended countermeasures
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop secure hardware designs and ensure compliance with emissions security standards
Support continuous improvement initiatives and mentor junior engineers on electromagnetic emissions security principles and practices
Requirements
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance with Sigma 14/15
Nice to have
Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers
Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling
Proficiency in circuit design
Strong analytical reasoning and problem-solving capabilities for troubleshooting complex electromagnetic signal issues
Exceptional attention to detail critical for identifying subtle electromagnetic vulnerabilities
Effective communication skills for reporting findings and providing training to technical and non-technical personnel
In-depth understanding of electromagnetic theory, signal propagation, antenna theory, and circuit design
Familiarity with government standards related to electromagnetic emissions security
Experience designing and implementing physical countermeasures to mitigate electromagnetic vulnerabilities
Strong data interpretation skills to analyze complex test data and identify security risks
Proficiency with hardware design for secure products and software tools such as LabVIEW, Visio, MATLAB, and SPICE
Strong technical documentation skills for creating reports
