Job Responsibility

Independently review detailed technical documents and identify salient issues related to nuclear safety
Engage with weapon system, component design, assurance, and other surety organizations
Maintain awareness of issues related to design, development, production, maintenance, and dismantlement of weapon systems
Assess tests, materials, and components for adequacy against requirements
Evaluate procedures, product specifications, and standards for compliance
Lead independent safety assessments of nuclear weapon systems and components, analyzing responses under thermal, shock, vibration, and EMI/EMC environments
Define problem scope and requirements, develop technical approaches, and apply quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., fault-tree, FMEA, margin quantification)
Design experiments or simulations to evaluate safety-critical subsystems, collaborating with system and test engineers to verify requirements
Develop analytical frameworks and digital models to support risk-informed decisions
Mentor junior engineers in safety-analysis techniques and review their deliverables for technical accuracy

Job Responsibility

Serve as a nuclear weapons expert and technical advisor within the Accident Response Group (ARG)
Conduct research and development activities to enhance response capabilities, identify gaps, and improve equipment for overall mission success
Provide technical guidance and support to ensure proper response, assessment, safe handling, and resolution of nuclear weapon-related emergencies
Utilize extensive experience with US Nuclear Weapons in the development of training and exercises
Actively participate in the technical planning of drills and exercises for the ARG, including the annual interagency Nuclear Weapon Accident Incident Exercise (NUWAIX)
Collaborate closely with the NNSA Office of Defense Programs (NA10), NNSA Office of Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation (NA80), and NNSA Office of Nuclear Incident Response (NA-84)
Work with the Department of War (DoW) and Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) emergency response partners in the development of training, exercise objectives, and events
Lead the technical planning team for the annual multi-agency Nuclear Weapon Accident Incident Exercise (NUWAIX) as the system integration expert for NEST/NA-84 exercise and operations planning
Represent Sandia in collaborative discussions with other agencies and laboratories to facilitate clear communication of information
