Job Description

We are seeking an experienced R&D Mechanical Engineer to join our Handling and Test Gear (H&T-Gear) Engineering Group (8476)! Our team design, develops, and maintains Handling and Test Gear for DoW use in the field. The ideal candidate will have several years of experience in designing, prototyping, testing and production of mechanical hardware and will be expected to work in a collaborative environment to perform a wide range of mechanical engineering activities that span that full product development cycle. On any given day, you may be called on to: Lead the design and development of critical pieces of H or T gear; Lead test and design verification activities; Lead and participate in drawing reviews; Organize and present high level project reviews; Partner with engineers at Sandia and across the NWE complex to ensure the success of the project; Effectively communicate design details and program status to management, NNSA, and DoW; Mentor team members; The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Livermore, Ca facility. Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Hands on mechanical design, analysis, test and/or manufacturing experience
  • Experience in designing mechanical hardware, performing design verification and qualification analysis and testing on machined and/or welded assemblies, fixtures, tooling, handling gear etc
  • Experience with computer aided design tools (Creo, SolidWorks etc.)
  • Experience with the 6.X product development lifecycle process or similar
  • Experience working on a Product Realization Team (PRT) and/or within the Nuclear Deterrence (ND) product realization framework
  • Experience with design and development of machined and welded assemblies, fixturing, handling gear etc
  • Experience with environmental testing (writing test plans, data acquisition, executing tests)
  • Experience with creating, reviewing and conducting peer reviews with mechanical drawings
  • GD&T knowledge and practical experience including tolerance analyses
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling
  • Experience with mentoring early career engineers
